Newsletter
8 (October 2000)

Dear Mutton Birds Watchers,
Well, here it is after a long wait there is finally a new UK tour! As
those of you who have previously received these news updates will know
it is long overdue as is this missive. The problem with regard to keeping
you informed (i.e. the cost, over £1000 per full mailing) has stayed about
the same. This is despite the fact that the list has grown to over 6000
strong. Thankfully, most new and many old listees have supplied email
addresses.
Please keep us informed of any address changes (email or snail mail) &
when
you do please advise us of your old address to avoid putting dupes into
the
list.
On the same subject I am hoping
there are many of you that have now
acquired email, if you have, please email us with your old address &
we
will then in future be able to email you news more frequently. This is
the
plan for the future. I apologise to those of you who have no email. There
will still be full mailings but only when there is substantial news.
Ok, the other good news is that finally the live electric album will be
available at the shows, The album "The Mutton Birds Live in Manchester"
was
recorded on the last tour on Feb 14th 1999. It will be available by mail
order from us in the normal way from Dec 4th. During the period of nearly
two years since the band last toured in the UK, many of you will have
introduced the bands music to your friends. Do try & make sure that
all
those that can be persuaded to come do come, as you know they will not
be
disappointed. Why not buy 2 extra tickets & give them to someone?
It could
be an early Christmas gift, why not take advantage of the 3 for the price
of 2 offer on Rain Steam & Speed - give the gift of good
music & solve 3 gift problems in one.
See you there in Nov. & Dec!
Kind regards,
Stephen Hedges

News
WE'RE STILL HERE! - Rumours of our demise have been
greatly exaggerated!
The Mutton Birds are still together. Don has been swamped
with TV music for
a New Zealand series called "Street Legal".
Also as many of you already
know Don was heavily involved in the Auckland Millennium
celebration show.
These have taken all of Don's available time.
UK TOUR - To prove that we are in fact
here and very much alive, we have a
UK tour planned for November/December 2000. Dates and
ticket information
are on this newsletter - please do come and see us!
Apologies for being so
late in coming - the TV job had to take precedence to
make things viable for
Don & family. The band line up will include Don,
Ross, Tony, and guitar genius ANDREW CLARIDGE - from great NZ band Garageland. A
Londoner, Andrew came into contact with the MBs as far
back as 1996, just after the making of Envy Of Angels. He
then went on to join Garageland, toured the world, and
even lived for a while in New Zealand. We're all very
glad to have him on board.
NEW LIVE ELECTRIC CD - As promised, we have the
Valentines Day (Feb 14th
1999) Manchester UK show. This limited edition of live
& electric Mutton
Birds is just what you all asked for! One for your
Christmas list. it will
only be available through us by mail order from Dec 4th
& at the tour dates.
IF YOU LIKED THAT YOU'LL LIKE THESE The Mutton
Birds "Envy of Angels"
gets a mention in the Q Magazine review of Robbie
William's latest album,
in the "Like that, try these" section. We do
promise that our videos are
less gory, though Our own recommendations are
below
The Complete Blam Blam Blam: Before The Mutton Birds
there was The Front
Lawn, and before The Front Lawn there was Blam Blam Blam.
From 1980 to 1982
seminal Auckland group, Blam Blam Blam, had a string of
top 20 singles with
Don McGlashan as drummer and singer.
Thrashing Marlin - Garage Sailors - A typical New Zealand
guitar gem. The
group is made up of various well know New Zealanders many
of whom you may
recognise from their Six Volts days, including our own
David Long. Well
worth it!
CARDWELLS -Marjorie and David Cardwell in Melbourne run a
forum for
discussion on the Mutton Birds music - it is also a means
of distributing
information on their gigs and releases. To subscribe to
the list, simply
send e-mail to cardwell@connexus.net.au with the words
"subscribe mutton
birds" in the subject line. All e-mails sent to the
forum get forwarded to
everyone on the mailing list. It's that simple and
totally FREE!
E-MAIL ADDRESSES - With the 'revolution' in web
technology (what DOES
'http' stand for??) & the introduction of cyber cafes
etc. we are hoping
that even more of you Bird Watchers have acquired an
e-mail address. At
present the mailing list stands at close to 6000 names
but news would go
out much more frequently if we had even more of those
innovative Hotmail,
Yahoo etc. addresses of yours At present the
mailing list stands at over
6000 names.
AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND - Sorry there are currently
no plans to tour New
Zealand & Australia, we will advise as soon as there
is further news on
this front
USA & CANADA - As some of you in these countries will
know from email
correspondence or indeed telephone conversations with me,
it has been my
intention & desire to try to put a show together in
North America to tie in
with the UK tour. At this point I haven't had time to do
it. The plan was
to advise you of a show in a City which hopefully
sufficient of you would
travel to make it viable. This could be say Boston,
Chicago, Toronto or NY,
I would advise you of the date, City & the venue
& offer you a period of
one week in which to get back to me confirming (with
credit card details)
how many tickets you wanted to buy. To make it work I was
going to require
a minimum of 100 ticket orders @ $50 US (yes I know how
high that is but it
has to be at that level to make it viable). This will
only work, if the
limited number of you there are in the US & Canada
are very interested in
seeing the band, this idea has come from the feelings I
have detected from
your emails, asking when the band will come. I will still
try to make this
happen and will email later as the majority of you are on
email. Check the
website also.
